Autonomy Meaning and Definition

Autonomy is the capacity or right of an individual or entity to make independent decisions, exercise self-governance, and have control over their own actions and choices without undue external influence or interference. Autonomy is often associated with the idea of self-determination and the freedom to act in accordance with one's own will, values, and preferences.

Autonomy can apply to various aspects of life, including personal autonomy (making choices about one's own life), individual autonomy (making decisions independently from others), and, in a broader context, the autonomy of institutions or regions to govern themselves within a larger political structure.

Respect for autonomy is a fundamental principle in ethics and is often applied in healthcare, law, and various other fields to ensure that individuals have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and lives, provided they are of sound mind and can give informed consent. Autonomy is a core concept in discussions of human rights and personal freedom.
