Definition of Lymphocytes:

    • Regulatory T cells (Tregs) that help maintain immune tolerance, preventing excessive or harmful immune reactions.
    • Memory T cells, which "remember" specific antigens and provide long-term immunity and faster responses upon re-exposure to the same antigen.

B Cells (B Lymphocytes):

  • B cells are responsible for the humoral immune response, focused on producing antibodies.
  • They feature B-cell receptors (BCRs) on their surface, which bind to antigens.
  • Upon activation by antigens, B cells can differentiate into plasma cells, which produce antibodies specific to the antigens.
  • B cells play a central role in recognizing and neutralizing pathogens through antibody production.

Natural Killer Cells (NK Cells):

  • Natural killer cells are innate immune cells that can recognize and destroy infected or cancerous cells without prior exposure to specific antigens.
  • NK cells are essential for early defense against pathogens and the surveillance of abnormal cells in the body.

Gamma-Delta T Cells (γδ T Cells):

  • Gamma-delta T cells are a subset of T cells with TCRs consisting of both gamma and delta chains.
  • They have a unique role in immune surveillance at epithelial surfaces and can recognize a wide range of antigens, including those from bacteria and stress-induced self-antigens.

Innate-Like Lymphocytes:

  • This category encompasses various lymphocytes, including mucosa-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells and invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells. These cells share properties with both the innate and adaptive immune responses and respond rapidly to infections and other challenges.

Functions of Lymphocytes:

Lymphocytes are indispensable for the immune system's ability to detect and defend against various threats. Their functions include:

Antigen Recognition: Lymphocytes are specialized in recognizing and distinguishing between different antigens, which are foreign substances such as viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens. Each lymphocyte has unique receptors on its surface to bind to specific antigens, enabling the immune system to identify and respond to a wide range of invaders.

Antibody Production (B Cells): B cells are responsible for producing antibodies (immunoglobulins) when activated by antigens. These antibodies can bind to pathogens, neutralize them, and tag them for destruction by other immune cells, enhancing the immune response's effectiveness.

Cell-Mediated Immunity (T Cells): T cells play a central role in cell-mediated immune responses.
