Neurodivergent Meaning

"Neurodivergent" is a term used to describe individuals whose neurological development and functioning are atypical in some way, particularly in terms of conditions related to the brain and nervous system. It acknowledges that there is a natural variation in the way people's brains work and process information. Neurodivergent individuals may have neurological conditions or differences such as autism, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), dyslexia, Tourette syndrome, and others.

The term is used to promote understanding and acceptance of people with diverse neurological profiles, emphasizing that neurodiversity is a natural and valuable part of human variation. It encourages society to move away from pathologizing these differences and instead embrace and support the unique strengths and perspectives that neurodivergent individuals can bring.

In contrast, "neurotypical" is a term used to describe individuals whose neurological development and functioning are considered typical or within the range of what is considered typical in a given society. "Neurodiversity" is the broader concept that encompasses the idea that neurological differences should be recognized and respected as a form of diversity, similar to other forms of diversity like race, gender, and ethnicity.
