Ventricles of Heart

The heart has two ventricles, which are the lower chambers of the heart. These ventricles play a central role in the heart's function by pumping blood to the lungs and the rest of the body. Here's a closer look at each ventricle:

  1. Right Ventricle: The right ventricle receives deoxygenated blood from the right atrium, which has been returned to the heart from the body. When the right atrium contracts, it pushes this deoxygenated blood through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. The right ventricle's primary function is to pump this deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary artery, which carries it to the lungs. In the lungs, the blood becomes oxygenated, and carbon dioxide is removed before returning to the heart.
  2. Left Ventricle: The left ventricle receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium, which has just returned from the lungs. When the left atrium contracts, it pushes this oxygenated blood through the mitral valve into the left ventricle. The left ventricle's primary function is to pump this oxygen-rich blood into the aorta, which is the main artery that carries the blood to the rest of the body, providing oxygen and nutrients to all the body's tissues.

The left ventricle is thicker and more muscular than the right ventricle because it has to generate the force required to pump blood throughout the entire body, while the right ventricle primarily pumps blood to the nearby lungs.

The coordinated contraction of the atria and ventricles, along with the opening and closing of the heart's valves, ensures the one-way flow of blood through the heart, allowing it to supply oxygen and nutrients to the body's tissues while removing waste products. Any disruption in the function of the ventricles can lead to various cardiovascular conditions and problems.
