Adonai Definition & Meaning

"Adonai" is a Hebrew word that means "Lord" or "My Lord." It is one of the names used for God in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and is often used as a reverential term to address or refer to the divine. In Jewish tradition, when reading the Tetragrammaton (the four-letter name of God, YHWH), which is considered too sacred to be pronounced, the word "Adonai" is often used as a substitute to avoid uttering the divine name directly.
