Affirm Definition & Meaning

The word "affirm" has a couple of related meanings:

  • To State Positively or Assert as Fact: When you affirm something, you are declaring it to be true or valid. For example, you might affirm a statement or a belief.
  • To Offer Emotional Support or Encouragement: In a more personal or emotional context, to affirm someone means to provide support, encouragement, or validation. This can be done through words, actions, or expressions that reinforce a person's worth or abilities.

For instance, someone might affirm their commitment to a particular goal, or you might affirm a friend by expressing confidence in their abilities or providing encouragement. The term is often associated with positivity and validation.
