  3. Class: Bacteria within a phylum are further divided into classes. These classes represent more specific characteristics and relationships among the bacteria.
  4. Order: The order level of classification further narrows down the group of bacteria with shared characteristics. For example, in the phylum Proteobacteria, there is the order Enterobacterales, which includes bacteria like Escherichia coli.
  5. Family: Bacteria are classified into families based on more detailed characteristics and shared ancestry. For instance, Enterobacteriaceae is a family within the order Enterobacterales and includes many well-known genera like Escherichia, Salmonella, and Shigella.
  6. Genus: The genus is a level of classification that groups species that are closely related and share many similarities. The genus name is typically capitalized and italicized, while the species name is lowercase and italicized. For example, Escherichia coli is the scientific name for a common bacterium.
  7. Species: The species is the most specific level of bacterial classification. A species is defined as a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. Each species has a two-part scientific name, known as binomial nomenclature, which includes the genus and species name.

  • Domain: Bacteria
